Sewing Machine Cover Tutorial

For a couple years now I've wanted to sew a cover for my sewing machine. I recently got some beautiful batik material from my mother in-law. She loves finding excuses to buy me craft supplies so after I opened my etsy shop she mailed me a package of various materials with dragonflies on them. I LOVE LOVE LOVE anything with dragonflies so she was excited to send me some things.

This is the before picture

After picture! It adds some color to my office/craft room!

My cat Lucy and one of my dogs Kudjo rarely leave my side during the day so Lucy presumed his spot on the chair to nap watch and Kudjo went to his favorite spot... under the desk.

I always have to draw everything out. I think I'm all about the visual. So I write out all my measurements and the different pieces of fabric I'll need.  I measured my sewing machine for height, length, and width. I added half an inch, next time I might add a bit more. But you be the judge for your machine. For height of machine I measured from the table up and over, then down to the other side.

Then it was time to cut them out. I cut one 27 by 17 and two 7 by 3.5

A little off from what I wrote on the paper but that's ok. Yours will probably be different too, depending on the size of your machine.

I've been instructing my sister on how to quilt and in the course of it lost my seam measuring tool so I just used a measuring tape. I pinned the fabric over 1/2 inch and ironed it just to help it lay flat. I got a little too close to a couple pins and melted them a bit... opps!

Then I sewed it down! In hind sight I probably wouldn't have pinned 1/2 an inch down.

Once all the fabric is sewed down on the big piece and the straps I measured how big I'd like the velcro, cut, pinned, and sewed it down.

Then I placed it on the machine and figured out where I wanted the straps to go across. Pinned the straps and other end of the velcro down and sewed them to the large piece.

And done!! I'm pretty happy with how it turned out! Now my machine looks pretty and stays dust free!

What do you think? Sewing machine covers... yay or nay?

  1. I love this idea!! I've always found it ironic that a machine used to create beautiful things can be such an eyesore. This is a MUCH better idea than buying a stupidly expensive colourful machine =)
