New Purchases

As I've mentioned a few times on here... I get a lot of flack in this house for being overly cheap. Perhaps I am but I always worry I am bad with money and so I try to make the best choices with our budget. One reoccurring theme in the comments my family makes about my spending, is that I don't replace things as needed i.e. clothes, shoes, computer, desk. The last two I bite the bullet this last week and finally purchased new ones!

My laptop was in pretty sad shape. I couldn't get it to do any of the system maintenance tasks which was not a huge deal. But I also two years ago spilled my beer on it. And the screen fried. So we got a used monitor from someone and hooked it up. Still worked! Then recently it started making noises and over heating. These noises were a little annoying. But sporadic so not too bad. I'd be sitting here reading blogs and BEEEEEEEPPPPPP!!! Kinda jolts ya in the morning. Anyways, long story short we bought a mac book pro last week and I'm in love.

Our new desk also arrived this week-end! It was scheduled to get here next week-end but it was early! Love that! We weren't too sure if it would fit in either of our cars so we had arranged to borrow my mom's van to pick it up. She however is gone in Edmonton this week-end. So we decided to try to cram it in there, even if I had to sit in the back squished up against the back window. When we got to the store we were in line in front of a girl wearing a sweater from the college I attended. Which is neat because I went to a smaller college in Saskatchewan, two provinces over. I thought she looked a little familiar but I'm a snob shy so we confirmed our order and drove around back to pick it up. When we got there she was already loading her large item with her family and offered the use of their dolly to us. Then upon spotting what we ordered they took it a step further and offered to use their truck to drop off our item at our house! They said the only thing they asked was that we first follow them to help unload their heavy box. That sounded not too bad so off we went.

Anyways, we get it home and it's heavy. Jon thinks over 150 pounds. We drag it into the house and decide instead of trying to safely get it down the stairs with Jon lifting more than his share and me trying to carry the awkward sized box, we would just open it upstairs and haul the pieces down.

We had to put the whole thing together. We thought usually there are a few pieces pre-built, but not this time! Nothing!

And look at all that hardware! Good thing Jon knew what he was doing...

Although, we found out once we he had almost all of it built, that the piece he's screwing on right now... he did wrong! Opps! He had to fix it before he could get the drawer to slide in.

So once I took these before and after pictures and looked at them I realize how embarrassing my old "desk" was. So don't judge me! I know how lame I was!

Life as a student taught me to be resourceful and frugal!! I used packed boxes of crap we never use, scrap pieces of wood, and a piece of roofing. It worked fine! But my new desk is so much better!

So there ya have it! Looks not too shabby! Since we set it up Kudjo thinks it's a perfect spot to lay in. He and Lucy are having a nap beside me as I blog. All together a pretty good week-end! That's the orchid Jon bought for me at the silent auction on Saturday. We also won/bought a couple tools and.... two season passes to the orchestra in the city!

How was your week-end? Are you enjoying your Monday?

p.s It's my 1 year blogaversary on Wednesday so stop in for a giveaway!!

  1. I have the same laptop as your old one! It's being a total bitch at the moment, and I'm seriously thinking about replacing it. I'm trying to hold out until the mid-year sales though to save some money! Your new desk looks great :)

Oh, and I'm still planning on linking up for Small Snapshots. But Blogger has a bug at the moment and won't let me load a new post... :( Apparently they're working on it, but I might be a little late in posting!
