A few days ago I observed on twitter a tweet looking for people interested in reviewing an e-book called "How To Shoot Your Kids!" written by Maggie Keegan Gross Photography. While I currently don't have children of my own, the majority of my friends do and there's been talk of setting up some portrait sessions. I normally shy away from portrait pictures because I simply have a very limited grasp on technique and skill of it. So I quickly signed up to read this e-book. I was so excited to read it! And I was not disappointed! The added bonus is how you can't help but melt at all her example pictures of her adorable daughter Eleanor!!
Maggie starts by explaining some important aspects to great pictures, lighting and composition. She then explains how to pick good and not so good locations and how to get the mood of the shoot to result in the picture you want. I loved that one of the reoccurring themes I picked up through out the e-book was to try to keep the pictures as natural and true to the child/family's personality that you can. And that the most important thing is that you capture that special moment!
The two sections I was most excited to read and soak all in was setting up poses and "tricks of the trade". She had some absolutely awesome ideas of how to get children to pose in ideal ways and different games to play with them to keep them interested in the shoot. I learned a lot of techniques from this book and it has helped me brainstorm some ideas of my own! I can't wait to get out there and try some of these out! The great thing about what I'm taking away from reading this book, is that some of the tips will also help when photographing adults and families!
Maggie has graciously offered to give away a copy of her e-book "How To Shoot Your Kids" to one of my readers!!! The giveaway closes Thursday, April 7th at midnight!

ReplyDeleteI'm most interested in her capturing the moment chapter...I stink at getting action shots, all I do is ask people to stop and pose, but the candids are the best!
