On My Bookshelf: Book Reviews

I'm a really picky reader. I can (and do) spend MONTHS trying to pick out my next book to read. There's nothing worse than starting a book and realizing it's not very good or interesting. So for that reason I spend a lot of time choosing a book. I'll read reviews. Then the summary again. Then a week or two later the reviews again. And so on and so on. Once I do decide to purchase one, either in paper or on kindle I get so into it I have another problem.

For as long as I can remember I've had this problem whenever I pick up a book. I hate putting them down. No seriously. I HATE it! It bugs me to no end when I have to stop reading and pick it up at another time. I almost always read a book in two days. I start it the first night and read till 3 or 4 am. Than I'm exhausted the next day and maybe take a nap. Then I read again that night till it's finished. Usually till 3 or 4 am. It's so dumb really. But I get so into a book I hate to stop halfway through. And when I do stop, I think about it for the whole day!

Because of my rigorous selection process I'm hardly ever disappointed! Of course, I'm disappointed when it ends; but for those two evenings I really enjoyed the story.

I love to read biographies and memories so usually those are my books of choice but lately I've been getting into a different genre. Hello Emily Giffin! I came into the whole "Something Borrowed" series after everyone else. But since than have read two of her books.

(It says click to look inside but really it means click to go to amazon.com)

Something Blue is the next book after Something Borrowed. And it follows along with the storyline but now with a different perspective. Heart of the Matter is a book that tells two sides of a story amidst a love affair. What I really like about Emily Griffin is her character development. She can make you really feel for a character and than chapters later side against them slightly.

I've been enjoying finding some great reads by authors that I haven't heard of before. One particular author is Maureen Johnson. She retweeted one of my bad dates stories on twitter one time so if that didn't make her awesome enough she wrote two books that I enjoyed.

They're about a girl whose aunt dies and leaves her 13 envelopes that send her off on an adventure to discover more about herself and the importance of living life to its fullest. They reminded me of how much I'd love to travel around Europe! These books make you think about the experiences you have in life and to always make the most of them.

This book I actually found out about first through the author Leslie Hager. I enjoy reading her blog Ireland Ever After so I was excited to read her book as it is based VERY loosely on her relationship with her husband! It's kind of a modern day Cinderella story. Except Sean didn't leave a glass slipper. Instead she was left with tidbits about his life that she used as clues to where she could find him in Ireland. I enjoy the way Leslie writes as I could really visualize and image everything that happened. It felt like it was a movie I was watching.

This is the book I read last night. My friend has been telling me for YEARS to read books by Sophie Kinsella so finally I decided to give her writing a try. I loved it! I don't know why I waited so long to read one of her books! This one made me laugh out loud so many times. Which wasn't the best thing as Jon was sleeping next to me! The main character in this book reminded me a bit of Bridget Jones. Mishaps keep happening to her that are really funny.

Now that I finished my last book I need some recommendations! What have you been reading lately? Have you read any of the above books before? What did you think of them?

  2. I have been thinking for MONTHS about reading a Emily Giffin book but was worried it was for people getting married or married. I always see her books when I walk into a book store. Do you think I would like them too? I just bought "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett. I am really trying to save it for my vacation at the beginning of November. I told myself not to pick it up but I one sleepless night I did. Normally it takes me a couple chapters to get into a book and it's hard for me to keep picking it up to read until I find myself interested in the characters and their lives...because of this I thought it would be safe to pick up and start. Wrong. I was hooked immediately!

I read the Stieg Larsson series this year and loved it! Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors. Her books always make me cry though! They are emotional but really well written.

For something completely different, "A long way gone, memoirs of a Boy Soldier" by Ishmeal Beah is a good read. Hard to face the reality of what he is talking about, but very good to read.

  3. I love Sophie Kinsella! You should also read her Shopaholic series; they are really good. Her books always make me laugh. :) You also might like Kate Morton's books. Her latest The Distant Hours was really good and hard for me to put down.

I think I need to be a pickier reader like you. :) I've bought several books lately that I just could not read. I really wish I had researched them better before I wasted my money.
