The One Where I Am Given A Knitting Machine

A few years ago I decided I need a hobby. I didn't really have any and I thought it might be fun to have something I liked doing that could be classified as one. I made it a goal to try anything and every project I could get my hands on. Since then I've enjoyed sewing, oil painting, acrylic painting, knitting, crocheting, quilting, and other diy crafts.

I'll be the first to admit that I can be a bit of a pack rat. Especially when it comes to craft supplies. Often I have some of my older adult friends say they have some supplies hanging around their place if I'd like to have them.  I have such a hard time turning them down. I mean, think of all that potential! So my craft has slowly gotten fuller and fuller. I had just spent a couple of days going through and critically purging things that in all honesty I probably couldn't use. But then I got a call... was I interested in an old knitting machine? Um... yes!

I was picturing like something you hold in your hand with plastic hooks. I was not expecting this! Actually, I received two of them. This is the more complicated looking one. I had the simpler one set up at first but I haven't been able to find the manual for it yet. It's taken a bit for me to get the hang of it but I think I might have it figured out!

Not bad eh? That's just the practice piece. But I also acquired a lot of old patterns too. So perhaps once I do a few more practice rows I'll eventually be ready to try a pattern.

After we set it up one of the first things I noticed is that there is no cords. It looks like it would be electric but it's not! The manual, which is dated in the 70's, says if you have problems take it to your local knitting machine store. Haha! I don't think we've had one of those for a while!

Speaking of things I've acquired. Along with the knitting machines I also was given boxes and boxes of yarn and patterns. This is just a portion of the boxes. The rest of them had to be put in the living room as I ran out of room in my craft room! I'm excited to keep playing with the knitting machine! Who knows what I'll be able to create!

  1. How fun! My mam was given a knitting machine once, when I was about 10 I think but it just sat in our spare room not really doing anything. She was a hand knitting and couldn't really get into using the machine so I think it ended up going to a charity shop! If i'd of been older then I might have really gotten into trying to use it, they do look really fun and I love how fast pieces of knitting grow using a machine.

    1. I know eh? the pieces come together so fast!! the lady who gave it to me said it takes like maybe 30 minutes to make a scarf! I can hand knit a scarf in a month? If I'm lucky! I feel the same way about my grandma's old singer sewing machine. I wish so much that I'd thought to try it out when I was growing up but it just sat there for so long collecting dust, and now it's gone! It's nice to still have the memories of it though! And all the quilts she made us with it!

  2. Neat! When you told me about it I was picturing it being that big! Your "practice" one looks great!! I can't wait to see your first pattern.

  3. That knitting machine looks cool. Have you made any full pieces with it? Is it hard to use? The practice piece looks good. And is that an OLD Avon box. LOL

  4. No, other than the practice pieces, I haven't tried any full pieces yet! I'm worried I'll get into it and then make a mistake and not know how to fix it without taking it ALL apart! It seems to be pretty straight forward to use, just it's all new and will take some getting used to the problem shooting part of it! haha yeah there was some really old boxes with yarn in them! Some of the pattern books were dated from the 70's and I wouldn't doubt the boxes were from that era too!
